Mayhew Tools
Mayhew Steel Products, Inc. is the oldest hand tool manufacturer in the United States. Family-owned, proudly American-made and rooted in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, Mayhew builds heirloom-quality tools for professionals and serious DIYers who demand durability and reliability.
When Mayhew came to Bright Cloud Studio, they were finishing an updated brand effort and knew their website needed to catch up. The existing site had served them well for years but it was showing its age. Products were difficult to find, messaging lacked clarity and the overall experience did not fully reflect Mayhew’s grit, legacy and customer-first culture.

Discovery, Custom Website Design & Build
Who Mayhew Serves
Using our discovery process, we clarified and aligned around Mayhew’s core audiences, including:
- Automotive technicians and mechanics
- Contractors, builders and woodworkers
- Professional tradespeople
- Serious DIYers and homeowners
- Distributors and retail partners
Across all segments, customers value craftsmanship, long-term reliability and tools that help them get the job done right the first time.
The Core Challenge
- A dated visual design that no longer reflected Mayhew’s updated brand
- Products that were difficult to find or rediscover
- Inconsistent messaging around US-made products and warranty
- Limited industry-specific guidance for customers
- Site “rot” from years of incremental updates without a unified strategy
Mayhew didn’t just want a new website. They wanted clarity, alignment and a long-term foundation.
Discovery Insights
Through collaborative discovery sessions and research, we uncovered several critical insights:
- Mayhew’s heritage, family ownership and New England roots were powerful differentiators but under-told
- Customers cared deeply about durability, origin and warranty but needed clearer signals on the site
- The website needed to speak directly to industries and use cases, not just list products
- Navigation and search had to be rebuilt around how customers actually think and shop
- The site should educate, not just sell, reinforcing authority and trust
These insights were documented in a comprehensive discovery document that became the strategic anchor for the entire project
Strategy & Planning
With a shared understanding in place, we moved into planning with confidence.
- Rebuilt the sitemap around customers, industries and product clarity
- Created wireframes that emphasized usability and product discovery
- Shifted messaging to be more customer-focused, grounded and direct
- Identified and resolved legacy technical and structural issues
- Planned industry-specific landing pages to better serve key segments
The discovery document ensured that every decision tied back to Mayhew’s values, customers and long-term goals.
Implementation
Our implementation phase focused on translating strategy into a site that felt unmistakably Mayhew.
- Visual updates that highlighted grit, craftsmanship, USA-made pride and family roots
- Simplified navigation and improved product organization
- Enhanced search functionality to make tools easier to find
- Clearer presentation of US-made products and warranty information
- A flexible foundation for future content, industries and growth
Throughout the build, we worked closely with the Mayhew team. Collaboration was continuous and intentional, ensuring alignment at every step and keeping the project moving smoothly.
Results & Impact
A website that authentically represents Mayhew and their customers
- Easier navigation and product discovery
- Improved organization and search experience
- Clearer brand messaging around heritage, quality and warranty
- A design the Mayhew team was genuinely excited to launch
The new site feels modern without losing its soul, a digital extension of a company that has been forging tools since 1856.
Ongoing Partnership
This project didn’t end at launch.
We continue to work with Mayhew as an ongoing digital partner, helping them refine, expand and maintain the site as products evolve and new opportunities emerge. It’s a relationship built on trust, shared values and a deep understanding of their business.
